Holiday Hosting Checklist: Make Your Fireplace Safer, Quieter, and Ready
Holiday Hosting Checklist: Make Your Fireplace Safer, Quieter, and Ready
Guests are coming, the weather is colder, and your fireplace is the star of the room. Use this quick December checklist to make sure your gas fireplace, wood stove, or electric fireplace runs cleanly, safely, and quietly all month long.
1) Quiet the Blower & Control the Heat
- Vacuum the blower intake and housing (unit off & cool). Dust build-up causes noise and reduces airflow.
- Use lower fan speeds during conversation hours; switch to higher speed for pre-heating the room.
- No blower? Many gas models heat well through natural convection—try fan-off for quieter ambience.
2) Glass & Surround: Streak-Free, Fingerprint-Free
When the unit is completely cool, wipe the glass with a fireplace-safe cleaner (no ammonia). For wood units, remove light haze from creosote with a specialty glass product and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads.
3) Battery Check (Gas Units)
Most remotes/receivers use AA or 9V batteries. Replace them now so you’re not hunting during a dinner party. If your model supports outage operation on batteries, test it briefly so you know the sequence.
4) Wood Fuel & Draft
- Burn seasoned wood (≤ 20% moisture). Damp wood = smoke, odour, and soot.
- Do a quick draft test on a cold night with a small kindling fire before guests arrive.
- Keep a small ash bed (≈ ½″) for easier relights and steadier output.
5) Add Holiday Ambience—Safely
- Keep garlands, stockings, and greenery the recommended clearance from the opening and mantel.
- Use a firescreen for open wood fireplaces; consider upgrading to a sealed gas insert for cleaner heat and easy control.
- In condos or suites, an electric fireplace gives flame effect with or without heat—perfect for long gatherings.
