Cold-Snap Ready: Get More Heat from Your Gas Fireplace This January

January 8, 2026 | Pioneer Fireplace

Technician optimizing a gas fireplace during a January cold snap on Vancouver Island

When a cold snap hits Vancouver Island, your gas fireplace is the quickest way to warm the room without overheating the whole house. Use these proven tweaks to boost comfort, reduce noise, and keep things running smoothly.

1) Dial In the Blower

  • Pre-heat fast: Run the fan on a higher speed for 15–20 minutes, then lower it to reduce noise.
  • Clean intake & housing: With the unit off and cool, vacuum dust from the fan area to restore airflow.
  • No blower? Many Valor-style units heat well through natural convection—try fan-off for quieter evenings.

2) Smart Thermostat & Flame Control

Use a setback schedule (slightly higher temp late afternoon/early evening). Lower the flame overnight and let the fan do steady work. If your control supports it, enable “thermostat” or “auto” so the unit cycles to maintain comfort.

3) Battery Check (Remote/Receiver)

Replace weak AA/9V batteries now—especially if your model can operate during outages on battery power. Test ignition and flame modulation to confirm signal strength.

4) Glass & Media Refresh

When completely cool, clean the glass with a fireplace-safe cleaner (no ammonia). Gently reposition log media according to your manual to improve flame appearance and reduce soot spots.

5) Drafts, Vents & Safety

  • Check that exterior terminations are clear of snow, debris, or nesting.
  • Confirm CO/smoke detectors are working with fresh batteries.
  • If you smell gas or have repeated ignition failure, contact our team—don’t attempt repairs beyond owner maintenance.

Thinking About an Upgrade?

Newer models deliver quieter fans, better glass coatings, and higher turndown ratios. Explore Gas Fireplaces or retrofit with Gas Inserts. Not sure what fits? See our Fireplace & Stove Guide or contact us.
